I blame it all on the technology that allows me to be accessible 24/7. It’s just too easy. Sigh.

I agree 100% with that comment. Technology has allowed virtually anyone and everyone to be in contact with each other 24/7.

(”Oh, I’m so valued by the company, if I didn’t work this many hours, the place would fall apart without me!”)

I bet people think that all of the time.

Hehe I think it's also got to do with people's egos! Quantifying and broadcasting your hours is telling everyone you're oh-so hardworking and reliable, and your boss should be so damn lucky to have you. Maybe it's to make up for the fact they hate their jobs, and want to find any other excuse to make themselves feel better about what they do ("Oh, I'm so valued by the company, if I didn't work this many hours, the place would fall apart without me!")

On the flipside, you could always ask them, "So do you have a life outside of work?"...lucky for me I don't have to ask anyone what they do for a living - most of the people I meet are students!
