March 2 — At least 10 people were killed in the U.S. when tornadoes swept through parts of the South and the Midwest, destroying a high school in Alabama and hitting a hospital in Georgia.

In the city of Enterprise, Alabama, at least one tornado struck between 1 and 1:30 p.m. local time yesterday, cutting a 3- mile (5-kilometer) swath from the southwest to the northeast, causing sections of the school to collapse, said Larry Walker, deputy director of emergency management in Coffee County.

The Alabama Emergency Management Agency said on its Web site that 18 people had died across the state, including 17 in Coffee. The Associated Press later reported the death toll in the state was revised to seven, five of them at the school in Enterprise. Some 40 to 50 people were injured, Walker said.
