‘Tis The Season

Posted by Bucky in West Virginia

What season? Hunting season of course! That’s right, I am a hunter / gatherer. I like to eat a lot of fresh meat in the fall, wild plants (ramps) in the spring, nuts and berries in the late summer. Ah yes, living in West Virginia certainly has it perks.

A very generous hunting season is what I consider to be one of those perks. We have a lot of large and small game in this great state. Everything from the 300 pound Black Bear to 1/2 pound Ruffed Grouse. I thoroughly enjoy my time spent in the woods and becoming one with nature.

Bow hunting season (for Deer) begins on October 18th this year, and I can hardly contain myself. I used to bowhunt religiously, but I stopped somewhere in the early 2000’s. I have wanted to get back into it ever since, and this is the first year that I get to do that. Excited would be an understatement. Last time I felt like this I had to have multiple acne treatments.

So, if you don’t want to see photos of me posing with a dead bambi, you should probably watch what you read around here in the coming weeks. (Then again, I may not post them…I am undecided at this point.)

What do you guys think? Should I post pictures of me with dead deer, or should I leave that to your imaginations?

Sometimes The Best Prison Guards Are Free

Posted by Bucky in Nature

Big Black BearThe way the warden sees it, the more than 400-pound black bear living in the middle of the sprawling Louisiana State Penitentiary is an extra layer of security.

“I love that bear being right where it is,” Warden Burl Cain said Monday. “I tell you what, none of our inmates are going to try to get out after dark and wander around when they might run into a big old bear. It’s like having another guard at no cost to the taxpayer.”

The bear was first seen by an inmate crossing a road in the prison on Friday. It was taking a stroll near the center of the state’s only maximum security prison, which is about 115 miles northwest of New Orleans. Most of the roughly 28-square-mile prison is run as a farm, but about 5 1/2 square miles is mostly untouched piney woods.

Prison workers measured the bear’s footprints, which were six inches in diameter, Cain said.

“Every inch equals 75 pounds, so that would make it about 450 pounds,” Cain said. “The wildlife people told us they think it’s a big female they’ve been tracking for a while.”

Prison officials believe they have eight to 10 bears on the grounds, said Gary Young, head of the executive management office at the prison.
