Someone called me a nimrod today.

Posted by Bucky in Funny Stuff, West Virginia

Someone called me a nimrod, so I decided to do a little reasearch on the word. I found some interesting stuff, and thought I would share.

Webster’s Dictionary

1.) a descendant of Ham represented in the Old Testament book of Genesis as a mighty hunter and a king of Shinar
2.) hunter

Origin of Nickname

Watersmeet School began using the nickname the “Nimrod” in the year of 1904.
By Biblical Accounts, Nimrod was “a mighty hunter before the Lord.” According to the Old Testament, he established a great kingdom and founded a number of important Babylonian and Assyrian cities. Watersmeet, situated in the heart of the Upper Peninsula Ottawa National Forest, adopted the name because the forest is prime hunting land for waterfowl, deer, and bear.
by Bill L. Roose taken from the 1934 Wahinain

Something of Interest

In the year of 1986, ESPN,”Sports America Show,” compiled the 10 top nicknames for high school sports teams. the “Nimrods” ranked third out of the 10 top nicknames.

1.) SYRUPMAKERS of Cairo,GA.
2.)BEETDIGGERS of Brush,Colo.
3.)*NIMRODS* of Watersmeet, MI.
4.)IMPS of Cary,N.C.
5.)ATOMSMASHERS of Jonhson Prep, Savannah,GA.
6.)ANGORAS of Clarkston,GA.
7.)FLIVVERS of Kingsford,MI.
8.)SQUIRRELS of Winslow,AZ.
9.)PEGLEGS of Stuyvesant in New York City
10.)DOTS of Poca,W. VA.

I live pretty close to Poca, WV. In fact, I have a few family members who were part of the DOTS. What is even stranger is that one of my aunts’ name is Dot. How’s that for sillyness?

Sneaky comment spammers

Posted by Bucky in WVb Stuff

I was going through the spam comments that get caught by askimet. Occasionally, askimet catches some of the good comments and throws them in the spam box. I usually try and sift through the spam at least once every 2-3 days. I ran across the following comment, read it, and was getting ready to approve it. Then I noticed that certain letters had an underline beneath them. They are, of course, hyperlinks.

An interesting comment…too bad it was spam. Click on the pic below for a larger one:

Gmail attachment size limit is now 20 megabytes (MB)

Posted by Bucky in technobabble

I logged into my gmail account this morning, as I always do, and looked up in the top right corner. That is always the first place I look to see if there are any special announcements that I might need to be aware of. There was a new one there in red letters stating that thereFinally! was a new (larger) size limit on email attachments.

I’m glad to see this change. I have several files stored in my gmail accounts, and anything over 10 MB I had to split into multiple .rar files. This will save a lot of time and trouble of having to do that.

Gmail just keeps getting better. I may never use my ISP provided email again. It seems like every time I do, the ISP gets bought by another ISP and I have to change my email address….and that sucks.

This is near the top of the list of the coolest things I have ever seen…or saw…or whatever word I am supposed to use there.

This is a high-speed video of a water balloon that doesn’t pop. Please visit http://www.lucidmovement.com for a complete blog post with more information and a higher resolution video. This shot was filmed with a Photron Ultima APX camera.

wow patch 2.1.0 download or wow update

Posted by Bucky in technobabble

One of the top google search trends for the day is wow patch 2.1.0 download or wow update. If you came here looking for that, you can download it from here: World of Warcraft > Official Patches > v210.

Checking updates to Google search trends could quickly become a hobby for me. I don’t know what most of the search terms relate to, but I find it interesting to click on them and have a peek!

Some searches are not easily explained. Visit the Hot Trends group to read the explanations of others and offer your own.
